The greatest thing about Sunshine is our staff. Many are college graduates, and many others are teachers in training. Each one loves children! They combine fresh, creative ideas with high energy to create a fun, learning environment for your child. Their fun personalities and strong moral character make them great role models for your child.

Every Sunshine counselor has a nickname. This helps create a fun, summer camp atmosphere in our program. One thing is for sure, whether you are talking to “Cricket,” “TicTac,” “Squirt” or any other Sunshine staff member, you will notice ONE outstanding quality: WE REALLY LOVE KIDS!

In addition to fun personalities, and strong character, we also take special attention in making sure they are prepared to work with your child! Here are a few “extras” we do:

The Sunshine Difference

Complete Background Check

Before an employee can begin working at Sunshine he/she undergoes an extensive background check including fingerprinting and criminal clearance through the Department of Justice, FBI, and Child Abuse Index. What’s more, the background is “live” meaning if a staff is ever convicted of a crime, we are made aware and can remove the employee immediately. Staff also tested for TB and has a general health clearance from a doctor.

Child Development Education

Each staff is required to be in progress of 6 semester units of child development at a college or university. Teachers (or head counselors in a room) must have a minimum of 12 units in child development and a minimum of 1 year working professionally with children.

Extensive Training

Staff is initially trained with over 8 hours of Sunshine’s philosophy of discipline and positive reinforcement, curriculum, supervision skills, and State laws and regulations (per the Department of Social Services regulations with children). Staff is tested on their knowledge of the materials. In addition, Sunshine holds monthly and quarterly training including emergency/disaster preparedness, classroom management, supervision, teamwork, parent communication, and much more!

CPR & First Aid Certified

Each staff is required to become CPR & First Aid certified. While we hope to never use that knowledge we want to be prepared in the event of an emergency.
