Décor, Theme and Room Presentation Tip: Lay a Good Foundation

When putting up a bulletin board you always want to start with a good foundation.  If you do not properly place your butcher paper your board will look messy and unfinished.  Here are some helpful tips, you can also use the video below to help when decorating!

  1. Measure your paper for the space you’ll need.
  2. Pin the paper to the wall using push pins. Once pinned, smooth out the paper and re-pin as needed working from the center of the paper outward making sure there are no bubbles, wrinkles or creases in the paper.
  3. Staple the paper. As you are stapling, be sure to continuously smooth out the paper to avoid bubbles and wrinkles.
  4. Add a border. For the border pin it in place before stapling, be sure your borders are straight and fit within the space provided.  If your border is too long, fold it and place behind or cut it.

Classroom Management Tips

Have you ever noticed during center time your children seem louder, walk around from toy to toy or the room looks a bit chaotic? Try these helpful tips to make center time more manageable!

  1. Small strategically placed groups– When having your children participate in center time, assign them center groups which you pick out. Limit the groups to 3-4 children. Choose personalities that get a long together and have common interests, this will minimize disagreements and will make the children’s time more fun and enjoyable.
  2. Rotations- Don’t force the children to play with the same center for a long period of time. This will lead to boredom which will increase behavior problems in your room. Try rotating centers! This is done by selecting 4-5 centers and placing them around the room in a circle or square pattern, this can happen on the floor or at tables. Place your groups of children at each center and set a time for 15 minutes, when the timer goes off the children clean up, then move/rotate to the next center.
  3. Change the Center Toys- Do not put out the same centers every day/ every week. The child will get bored and once again boredom leads to behavior problems.  Change the centers daily or weekly.  If you do not have more than five centers in your room, ask your co counselors to trade!
